Playing Around

Playing around is a concept that has been around long before humans were on this planet, yet it is a fascinating thing to explore even in modern society. The word play comes from the Dutch word “pleien” which meant to leap for joy or dance. The word around derives from a combination the words “a” and “round”. In the digital age, we have less time to just relax and play around with things. We are so caught up with work, family, friends and other responsibilities that we forget what it’s like to just do something without any motive or end goal. Hobbies are a prime example of this phenomenon. People need more time to forget their responsibilities and stress to explore more of the world. There are many fascinating things we could do, no matter where you are. Go to your local coffee shop, bar or club and watch a musical performance. Learn a new special skill, like crocheting or carpentry. Get fit by lifting weights, swimming, running or playing a sport. Whatever the case may be, the relaxing sensation of learning something by doing it is a fascinating process.

Dogma of skill

DogmaWhen learning a new skill, or one that you are familiar with already and wish to attain more knowledge, you will undoubtedly run into a Dogma. This is an entity, whether it is a person or a group of people, who will tell you their way is the only way to do the thing you want to do. For example, people who only do Crossfit, or only buy a Chevy because it is a Chevy. There is usually 2 ways people approach it, either join their cult or hate it. People who join tend to end up preaching to others later on, while people who hate it often preach against it. There is nothing wrong with joining or hating a Dogma, but recognize the benefits and negatives of it. Take it with a grain of salt. If you think the group is something that you wish to experience, by all means go ahead, but recognize that nothing is a Dogma. Nothing is the one and only way to do something.
